Saint Benedict is considered by Catholics and Orthodox Christians as the Patriarch of the Western monks,

The medal of Saint Benedict is a sacramental recognized by the Catholic Church, endowed with great power of exorcism and liberation from demonic influences. Like any sacramental, it has power not because it is a beautiful medal, because it is blessed, or because a prayer is engraved on it, but because this power resides in Christ himself, who gives it to the Church.

Decoding the meaning of the medal

The obverse of the medal: Saint Benedict is depicted in the center of the medal. In his right hand, he holds a cross. The cross represents the saving power of Christ and the work of evangelization accomplished by the Benedictines throughout the centuries. In his left hand, he holds a book containing the holy Rule of his order. To his right is a broken cup. This cup, it is said, had been poisoned by rebellious monks who were at odds with Saint Benedict. The cup broke when Saint Benedict made the sign of the cross over it, which saved his life. To his left is a raven. The raven carries a loaf of poisoned bread that the monks tried to give to Saint Benedict.

Above his head is written: Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti (The Cross of Saint Father Benedict). Around the border are the words: "May we be strengthened by his presence in our death." Beneath his feet are the letters: EX SM CASINO MDCCCLXX (From the sacred Mount Cassin, 1880).

The reverse: the reverse of the medal is dominated by a large cross.

  • On each of the four arms of the cross, it is engraved:
    C. S. P. B. (Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti): "The Cross of Saint Father Benedict"
  • On the vertical line of the cross:
    C. S. S. M. L. (Crux Sácra Sit Mihi Lux): "May the Holy Cross be my light"
  • On the horizontal line of the cross:
    N. D. S. M. D. (Non Dráco Sit Mihi Dux): "May the dragon not be my guide"

Starting from the top, clockwise, and all around the edge, appear the initials of the exorcism prayer:

  • V. R. S. (Vade Retro Satána): "Begone, Satan"
  • N. S. M. V. (Non Suáde Mihi Vána): "Do not come to advise me your vanities"
  • S. M. Q. L. (Sunt Mála Quae Libas): "The drink you pour is evil"
  • I. V. B. (Ípse Venéna Bíbas): "Drink your own poisons"
  • PAX: Peace

It then reads: "May the Holy Cross be my light and may the Demon not be my leader. Begone, Satan. Do not come to advise me your vanities. The drink you pour is evil. Drink your own poisons. Peace."

Indulgences and special blessings

The medal itself, as we have seen above, has no power. Those who wear it must not fall into superstition. The medal is simply a visible sign of the inner devotion and faith that the faithful has in Jesus and his servant, Saint Benedict. And it works through faith!

The medal carries an unconditional indulgence for all who, at the time of death "use, kiss, or hold the medal in their hands with reverence." It is also granted if the person entrusts their soul to God, makes a good confession, and receives Holy Communion. If the person is unable to do so, they will invoke the holy name of Jesus with their lips with a deep feeling of contrition, or with their heart, if they cannot speak.
