Since the 4th century and the conversion of King Tiridates, Armenia has been a Christian land, soon torn between rival empires.
Since then, the Church, autocephalous since the Council of Chalcedon in 451, has ensured the continuity of Armenian identity.
A staunch pagan, King Tiridates IV (who reigned from 298 to 330) was converted to Christianity by Gregory the Illuminator, before the Roman Emperor Constantine (313).
Tiridates made Armenia the first Christian state in the world, strengthening the monarchy and forever sealing the country's destiny. Over the centuries, Byzantium became Sunni, and Iran, Shiite.
Armenia remained until the present day a Christian island in an ocean of Islam.
In 3,000 years of history, the country has only intermittently benefited from a national state, for about 12 centuries.
The Church remained the sole authority guarding the Faith, the language, and the soul of the nation. To assert itself, it had to wage a missionary and doctrinal battle.
Certainly, at the beginning of the 4th century, polytheism, intellectually outdated, was on the defensive; but to replace the deities of paganism, proclaiming its oneness fiercely, was not the most credible candidate.
To be worn with pride in memory of all Christian martyrdoms.
