The Fleur-de-lis

A Tribute to the Virgin Mary and the Sovereignty of the French Empire

The flower that connects heaven and earth, a symbol of purity and Sovereignty

In ancient times, the lily was present in the Roman Christian and Byzantine worlds.  Pliny the Elder tells us: “no plant is more fruitful,” and the Church Fathers already declared it the Royal Plant and Queen of Flowers. A royal French symbol since the Carolingian sovereigns starting with Pepin the Short—father of Charlemagne and son of Charles Martel—but more widespread in the Kingdom starting with Charles the Bald and the Capetian Kings.

The coat of arms of the French crown represented three “Fleurs-de-lis” (old spelling), evoking the Holy Trinity (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) and the three theological virtues: Faith, Hope, and Charity.

The fleur-de-lis was also a symbol of the Sovereign’s submission to divine authority, extended throughout the Holy Roman Empire (Families of Divine Right).

It also evokes the rays of the sun; liturgy associated Christ with the sun, with light, and royalty has always referred to solar symbolism, notably among the Visigoths.
