Godfrey of Bouillon gave his life for Christ, the Latin States of the East and a posterity of Christian vassals, and of course for the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre.
The emblem of the Holy Sepulchre
Charged with nearly nine centuries of history, the Jerusalem Cross remains one of the most recognizable emblems of the medieval world and Eastern Christendom.
Appearing in its iconic form during the era of the Latin States of the East, it is traditionally associated with the Kingdom of Jerusalem and the knights who set out for the Holy Land. Its characteristic composition brings together a large central cross and four smaller crosses arranged around it.
Several interpretations have been given to it over the centuries. The best known sees the large cross as the Christ, surrounded by the four Evangelists; another associates the five crosses with the five wounds of Christ. It was also understood as the image of Faith spreading from Jerusalem to the four cardinal points.
Made of 925 silver, this pendant offers a particularly elaborate interpretation. The polished silver boldly outlines the central cross while the openwork details and deliberately darkened areas create depth and contrast, recalling the character of ancient goldsmithing.
Substantial without being excessive, this Jerusalem Cross possesses that particular presence of jewelry inspired by history: it is noticed without needing to do too much.
